Chapel sessions for 21/10/2013

Hi, and welcome to another blog post. This one is about the chapel session for 21/10/2013 I have decided to move the chapel sessions over to this blog, from that one over there, so I can have all my posts in one place. I'm not really sure why I had 2 blogs in the first place. Anyway, on to this week's chapel session. This week we didn't have a band in, but we got the RTU's and Jake to form a quick band so we could have a go at setting up for them. We needed to microphones to mic up a drumkit, 2 guitar amps to mic up, 1 vocalist, and we needed to put a keyboard through directly to the desk, but also put the keyboard through an amp so the band could hear it as well. TO be honest with you, I found the hole process very disorganised, because we knew what we were supposed to do, but we weren't very quick, and there wasn't one person who took a management roll, and we were slow at it. I think it could have been better, but then the band kept going out of time, so we couldn't get a good recording of them. We also didn't use the multitrack because it would take too long to set up. There were also problems with the setup, that being that some mics weren't posissioned right, and some things weren't micked up at all, so the RTU's had to spend time fixing what we had already done, which I thought was fair enough, as it was our first time setting up. Anyway, I think that'll do for this blog entry, so see you next time.

Exploring radio - Kiss 100: Lesson 1

Hello everyone, and welcome to this new blog series in which I will be exploring the various goings on of kiss 100. I wil be putting together a presentation about kiss 100. I will be exploring there
    • Types of programs
    • Genre
    • Audience profile
    • Production processes
    • Market share
So in this lesson I started to get some notes together for my chosen station, which is kiss 100, which is based in london, but broadcasts Internationally across the UK on satalite TV and DAB radio. They also have a mobile app for iPhone, iPad, and android phones, which let's you listen back to previous shows, and also listen live to their 3 radio stations, kiss 100, kiss fresh, and kisstory. I also found out that kiss 100 started as a pirate station in london in the 1990's, but then expanded. I chose to listen to The Rickie, Melvin and Charlie Breakfast Show while I was researching the station, which broadcasts from 06:00-10:00, Monday-Friday. The main focus of the station is to play current pop music, with specialist underground shows later on in the night, with specialist dj's who specialise in their spacific genres. They also broadcast the news, and adverts every 15-30 minutes or so. I also found out that they have 2.2% audience share as of Dec. 2012. It's main audience is teenagers and young adults, a cut off of around 30-35, teenagers from around 13-15. it is also owned by Bauer radio, who own other stations, e.g. the hits radio, heat radio and Kerrang radio. The station sometimes hosts quizzes as well, and they encourage people to phone in. Anyway, I think that'll do it for this week's entry, I'll write again when I next do some more work. Thanks, Kieran.

    Lesson for 11/10/2013

Hi there, and welcome to this blog entry about Friday's lesson for 11/10/2013 In this lesson we were asked to work in a group and investigate a particular radio program. It took us a while to decide which program and station to go for, but eventually we decided on the radio 1 breakfast show with Nick Grimshaw. We decided to give certain people certain aspects of the program to look at. I looked at different aspects of the program; different features, the format, length, ETC. The info I managed to find is below.

    Info

The radio 1 breakfast show Type of show: Music and chat Runs from 06:30—10:00, Monday-Friday on BBC radio 1. Produced by Matt Fincham, Ian Chaloner, Fiona Hanlon, Laura-May Coope Offers a podcast of the best bits of the week, which is a free download from the BBC site. Broadcast from studio 82A, broadcasting house in london. The breakfast show is the flagship show on bbc radio 1, and Nick Grimshaw, who took over from Chris moyles, who holds the record for the longest running breakfast show, presents it. He has brought a feature from his previous show called call or delete where celebrities choose a random contact from their phone and decide whether to call them with a story that Nick Grimshaw is telling them, or delete them from there phone. Other features are wheel of four tunes, in which a listener spins a virtual wheel and what ever it lands on is the song they play. Showquizness where a robotic voice who is occasionally rude asks questions about show business that nick and one listener compete to answer. They also do a feature on a Friday after 09:30 called the mixtape, where an artist does a live mix for half an hour of mostly songs from the 2000’s. Nick also has big named guests in, usually around 08:15, previous guests include Justin Bieber, Emma Watson, One Direction and Alicia Keys. The music played is usually from the radio 1 playlist, also Nick has a record of the week, which is usually from the radio 1 B or C lists. Aimed at radio 1's younger audience, cut off around 25. Usually more chatting then music, but it usually has adverts for other programs on the BBC in between songs. Usually 2 songs in a row. There is a news feature called newsbeat, every half an hour until 8 o'clock, and then it is half past the hour from then on throughout the day on radio 1. I hope you ffound this interesting, and I look forward to writing about something else next week. Thanks for reading.

    Lesson for 04/10/2013

Hi there, and welcome to another blog post. In this one, I'm going to discuss the goings on of the lesson for friday, 04/10/2013. So, you'll remember last week's lesson where I listened to, collected information about, and analysed BBC Radio extra, well this week, first of all, we discussed our listening figures we had found for our respective stations. i had not managed to find the figures, but I had managed to find the website that we were supposed to get them from (which is rajar.co.uk. After that, we were told to listen to a completely different radio station; one that we wouldn't normally choose to listen too, so we weren't used to the content and format. I chose , as although I have listened to it in the past, it isn't my preferred radio station of choice. I listened to the breakfast show finishing, and the hand over to Colin Murray, after the news at 10 o'clock. I then did some research on the station while I was listening, to feedback to the group, and in the process discovered that the talksport.com site was blocked by the RNC internet policy because the site is affiliated with gambling, and mentioned gambling terms/sites though out the site. so I had to rely on other sources for my information. `However, I could still listen to it because the station is not hosted on talksport's site, the actual stream link is hosted on another server that isn't blocked, so I could put that URL in my portable media player of choice (Foobar2000

    Lesson for 27/09/2013

Hi there, and welcome to this new blog where I publish the goings on in Friday's media lessons at RNC. This Friday we were discussing radio, and what type of radio programs/stations we enjoy ourselves. I chose BBC radio 1XTRA, as that is the station I listen to the most. If you're not familiar with bbc radio 1xtra, they play a mix of brand new music, from up and coming artists in the UK, USA, and Jamaica/the caribbean. It's main genres are hiphop, RNB, UK garage/UK grime, dancehall, dubstep and drum & bass. It is a brother/sister station of BBC radio 1, except it does not broadcast on an FM frequency. It broadcasts on digital TV around the UK, DAB radio and streams over the internet. Its main audience is 15-30 year olds, (5 years shorter than radio 1; 35). Anyway, we also talked about different radio features/quizzes that show hosts may play on their shows to get the audience envolved. We were then told to go and listen to a station of our choice, and whilst we were listening, we should collect some facts and research the station. I chose to listen to bbc raio 1xtra, specifically, the Trevor Nelson show, from 10:00-12:45. I managed to play along with his feature called 5 seconds to name, which entails Trevor playinG a 5 second clip of a mashup of an artists songs, and the listeners have to guess which artist it is. (it was Nelly Furtado) We did this for half an hour, and then we discussed in a big group, what we had listened to, and any extra info we had found out about the station. This week's session should be fun, as we're going to swop stations with another person, putting us out our Comfort zone.
